Quick answer: Choose Kochi or Fort Kochi for easy access, heritage streets and the widest choice of short programs. Choose Wayanad for forest, river and real distance from city life. Choose Varkala if a cliffside beach and a yoga-led trip matter most to you. Lifed currently hosts programs in Kochi and Wayanad, and not yet in Varkala.
All three are in Kerala. They feel like different countries. Kochi is a port city with centuries of trade in its streets. Wayanad is a hill district of forests, plantations and rivers in the Western Ghats. Varkala is a cliff town above the Arabian Sea, at the southern end of the state.
The right one depends less on which is "best" and more on what you want your days to feel like.

Kochi and Fort Kochi: easy to reach, easy to combine
Fort Kochi sits at the tip of the Kochi peninsula, with old bungalows, Chinese fishing nets on the waterfront and quiet lanes that make walking part of your day. Mainland Kochi (Ernakulam) is a working city with good connections across Kerala.
Choose Kochi if:
- It is your first time in Kerala and you want simple logistics.
- You have limited time and want to start your program soon after landing.
- You want to combine practice with a little culture: walking, cafés, art.
- You want a day program or a weekly series rather than a full stay.

Further east, near Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, Munkudil Ayurveda and Yoga Retreat hosts a 3-day women's birdwatching, Ayurveda and yoga program in a riverside property on the Kuttampuzha river, about 43 km from Cochin airport, from ₹53,500. Both are a good middle ground if you want nature without the long drive to Wayanad.
Keep in mind: Fort Kochi is a popular tourist area, especially from December to February. If you want silence, ask your host where the venue is and how quiet the rooms are.
Wayanad: forest, river and real distance
Wayanad is a hill district in northern Kerala, part of the Western Ghats. Programs here are set among coffee plantations, forest and rivers. It is the place people choose when they want to stop, not just slow down.
Choose Wayanad if:
- You want to be properly away from screens, traffic and noise.
- You have at least five to seven days.
- You like walking, nature and early mornings.
- You do not mind a longer transfer to get there.
What you can book in Wayanad on Lifed:
| Program | Format | Price shown |

Keep in mind: Transfers to all Wayanad programs are self-arranged. The nearest airport, Kozhikode (Calicut), is about 90 to 120 km away depending on the venue, on winding hill roads. Mornings and evenings can be cool, so pack a warm layer.
Varkala: cliffs, sea and a yoga scene
Varkala is a beach town in Thiruvananthapuram district, known for its red laterite cliffs above the sea and a relaxed scene of yoga studios, cafés and Ayurveda centres along the cliff.
Varkala may suit you if:
- You want a beach-led trip with yoga or Ayurveda alongside.
- You enjoy a sociable, traveller-friendly atmosphere.
- You are flying into Thiruvananthapuram.
What you can book in Varkala on Lifed: nothing yet. We only list programs once they are co-created with a vetted Healthmate and reviewed before going live, and we have not done that in Varkala so far. If you have your heart set on the coast in southern Kerala, our 14-day Panchakarma stay in Kollam, hosted by Aswanimadom, is reached from the same airport (about 70 km from Thiruvananthapuram) and offers a quieter backwater setting.

Best destination by trip length
- One day or a few hours: Fort Kochi or Thrissur. Fit a session into an existing itinerary.
- Two to five days: Kochi for day series, the 3-day women's program near Thattekkad, or the 2-day Ayurvedic reset in Kollam.
- Seven days: Any of the three regions. Choose by setting.
- Fourteen days or more: Fort Kochi or Kollam for Panchakarma, or Wayanad for the 28-day Kalaripayattu program.
What a day feels like in each place
In Fort Kochi, mornings often start with yoga or a walk along the waterfront before the town wakes up. Between sessions you can walk to a café or a gallery, then return for an afternoon therapy. Evenings are quiet but never remote. It suits people who rest better with a little life around them.
In Wayanad, the day follows the light. On the Ayurvedic reset, for example, the published schedule starts at 5:30 am with quiet sitting by the river, moves through yoga, pranayama, a doctor consultation and bodywork, and keeps a 90-minute device-free rest period in the afternoon. There is little to do outside the program, which is exactly the point.
In Varkala, days usually revolve around the cliff and the beach: a morning class, a swim, and sunsets from the cliff path. It is sociable, which some people love and others find distracting on a reset.
Weather and season in each place
| Kochi and Fort Kochi | Wayanad | Varkala | |
|---|---|---|---|
| October to February | Warm and pleasant; busiest December to February | Cool mornings and evenings; green after the monsoon | Warm, dry, peak beach season |
| March to May | Hot and humid | Milder than the coast | Hot |
| June to September | Heavy monsoon rain | Very wet; some roads affected | Monsoon; rough sea |
Many Ayurveda centres consider the monsoon a traditional season for Ayurvedic programs, so a rainy-season stay can suit you if you are happy to stay indoors more.
A simple way to decide
Ask yourself what you want to be true on day four.
If the answer is "I want to have rested and seen something," choose Kochi. If it is "I want to have stopped," choose Wayanad. If it is "I want to wake up by the sea and practise," Varkala is worth a look, though you will need to book outside Lifed for now.
