Want to Start Cycling Again? Build Riding Confidence in Kochi
You have a bicycle. You know how to ride it. Still, when someone says, “Let’s go for a ride tomorrow,” you hesitate.
Will I keep up? What if I get tired halfway? How do I ride with a group without feeling like I’m holding everyone back?
So the bicycle stays where it is. Another weekend passes.
For some of us, this is where cycling gets stuck. We want to move outdoors and enjoy the ride, but we would like a little guidance before heading further.
If this feels familiar, Lifed’s 2-day cycling program in Ernakulam, Kochi, is designed around riding confidence through coached practice.
What researchers found when adults received cycling guidance
In 2003, a team in central Sydney tried a practical idea: offer cycling skills courses to adults, then ask them about their riding again two months later.
The project began with 113 participants. At follow-up, riders reported better cycling skills and confidence, and 56% said they were cycling more. The study was published in 2006 in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport. PubMed
That is an encouraging story, but it needs context. It was a pilot based on participants’ own reports. A later Vancouver study, published in 2019, did not find greater improvements in confidence or overall cycling among course participants than in its comparison group. ScienceDirect
Together, these studies offer a useful reminder: guidance can be worth exploring, but a short course cannot promise a lasting habit. What you practise afterwards matters too.
For someone returning to cycling, a helpful starting question is quite simple: what would I like to understand better about my next ride?

What happens in Lifed’s 2-day cycling program in Ernakulam?
This day program has two sessions on consecutive days, led by cycling coach Solvyn Tom.
Day 1: An approximately 24.8 km ride from Queen’s Walkway through Pizhala and Cheranallur. Coaching covers posture, braking, gears, cadence and pacing, followed by mobility and recovery guidance.
Day 2: An approximately 33.4 km ride from Koonamthai, Edappally, towards Aluva. The focus moves to group positioning and managing effort, ending with a ride review and a weekly riding plan.
This program was co-created by Lifed with the HealthMate c3racing. The routes across Ernakulam are the setting for learning through actual riding. LIFED
Think about the questions you could bring to that experience. Am I starting too quickly? Do I understand when to change gears? What makes a pace manageable for me?
These are useful things to explore while someone can see how you ride and offer guidance.
Is this suitable if I am returning to cycling?
It is worth discussing your current ability with the coach first. The distances require existing riding ability; this is not a first-time learn-to-cycle course. LIFED
Before booking, tell Lifed when you last rode and roughly how far you comfortably ride now. Ask about bicycle and helmet requirements, equipment availability and the planned group pace.
A program should fit where you are today. There is no need to pretend you are already a more experienced rider.
